46th Annual Beef-a-rama - Friday eve dance 6-9:30pm. Saturday 9am - Rump Roast Run sponsored by the Lakeland Area Rotary Clubs. The downtown Minocqua beef cook-offs begin bright and early in the morning along with live music and other tasty treats. Early sandwich sales begin at 1pm. Other all day activities include a craft show at Torpy Park from 9am to 5pm, kids activities, and of course the famous parade of beef at 2:45 down main street. Summers End Half Marathon-5K & Paddle Battle

What better way to end your summer than a weekend of fitness events in the beautiful Northwoods of St. Germain? Sign up for one or both of the weekend’s events!

There will be canoe and kayak races on Saturday, September 10th starting at 12:30 pm at Fibber's Restaurant and Resort. Saturday night we will be having a free, live concert by Bret & Frisk at the town pavilion from 6-9 pm. Then on Sunday, September 11th runners and walkers will race to the finish in either a 5k or half-marathon beginning at 8:30 am.

Events will include:

Choose from either a 3.5 mi. or a 7.5 mi. flat-water paddle. The race will start at Fibber’s Restaurant & Resort on the north shore of Big St. Germain Lake and continue along the scenic St. Germain River, then return to Fibber’s.

Get your feet ready for a 5K or half-marathon distance run or walk on our paved bicycle trail and St. Germain’s back roads.

A portion of the profits (after expenses) will be donated to the Vilas County Food Pantry.

Memorial Day Weekend updates

As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, we've got plenty to be thankful for. Veterans have fought over 200 years to defend this country and its freedoms and that we are most thankful for. On Sunday at Veteran's Park in St Germain there will be a service at 3pm to honor those who have served our great country and we urge you to attend.

Just south of the hotel along the highline, a newly paved trail has just been constructed for hiking and biking. It's a beautiful site and will give folks an wonderful opportunity to explore the northwoods right from our doors. The new 4 mile eastern leg of the trail connects at the St Germain Info Bureau then onto the existing paved route west along Highway 70 and north on Hwy C to SAyner and beyond... all the way to Boulder Junction and on to Arbor Vitae!

The new path can be used now and is slated for completion no later than June 30.

Rest in Peace Charles Vogel

St Germain, WI - Chuck Vogel, former Rustic Manor Motor Lodge hotelier, contractor/owner of Charles Vogel Enterprises, Inc., and owner and operator of Arrowhead Groomers, passed away April 13th, 2011 at 3:30pm of cancer.

Both he and his wife, Mary, were very large supporters of many St Germain community efforts including the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club and snowmobiling in general.

His funeral information is:

21st Annual Klondike Days in Eagle River this weekend!

Wisconsin's #1 Family Fun Winter Festival - Klondike Days - is underway this weekend in neighboring Eagle River, WI!

March 5-6, 2011 marks this event's 21st annual showing - and the event has grown into quite a festival of uniquely historical and winter related themes including:

History of Klondike Days

Klondike Days, a family-oriented gala event featuring a variety of turn-of-the-century activities, is planned for Eagle River Saturday and Sunday, Mar 5 and 6, 2011. Making our new home the first weekend of March. Highlights of the weekend long festival will be River Country Red's Rendezvous and Living History, North Woods Championship Dog Weight Pull, the one and two-horse Log Pull Classic, Hayward style lumberjack competition, the First National Bank chain-saw carving competition, the Native American cultural exposition and a huge winter craft show.

The entire event was developed to encourage families to enjoy the Northwoods in February, according to sponsoring organizations. The festival is billed as Trig's Klondike Days due to the sponsorship of Trig's food stores in Eagle River, Rhinelander, Minocqua, Wausau and Stevens Point. All the Klondike Days activities will be headquartered on the Eagle River High School and Rocking W Stable off Highway 45 North. Food will be available at two locations.

Most events are held from 9 AM to 4 PM both Saturday and Sunday. The Native American Cultural Exposition will be at 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM. The Northwoods Championship Weight Pull is 11 AM to 4 PM. The Lumberjack Competition is from 11:00 AM to 3 PM Saturday and NOON to 3 PM Sunday. The Horse Pull is from 11 AM to 3 PM. Saturday is the One-Horse Pull; Sunday is the Two-Horse Pull. Competition event times are subject to change.

While Klondike Days is an outside event with many animals, we ask that you leave your pets at home.

Klondike Days History

The year 2011 marks the 21st year of Trig's Klondike Days in Eagle River, Wisconsin -- "One of the most multi-faceted winter events in the nation."

Klondike Days got its start in the late 1980's when Eagle River residents and business professionals Perry Pokrandt, Sue Mirwald (then Eagle River Chamber of Commerce President), and the late Pete Maurer thought it would be a great idea to start a winter festival in Eagle River which would be good for business, as well as showcase the community's decades-long reputation for providing outstanding, family-oriented experiences in its pristine environment.

The first name considered for the event was "Ice Fest," but Conover resident, John Jaspar, told organizers he believed the name should reflect the history and pioneering spirit of Eagle River's original settlers and Native American culture, and suggested "Klondike Days," which was immediately adopted.

Eagle River stalwart and business owner, Trig Solberg, of Trig's Stores has been a major sponsor and supporter of Klondike Days right from the beginning. The first event featured dog sled races and dog-pulls at Eagle River's World Championship Snowmobile Derby Track.

According to long-time volunteer Larry Snedden, "the dog racing and pulling were great attractions, but the dogs didn't always want to cooperate, crossing over each other, and being, at least, somewhat independent." Nevertheless, Klondike Days was an instant success, and, unlike so many other like events, broke even its very first year, with a budget of $69,000 and 250 dedicated volunteers.

Today, the budget is measured in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, there are many loyal sponsors, and hundreds of equally loyal volunteers, many working year-round to make Klondike Days a success.

"Since the dog mushers and owners also noticed difficulty in keeping things on track, we started to look for additional events," Snedden says. Pokrandt suggested a "History of Logging" event, where loggers would cut, split, and stack wood. "People loved it, as did the participants," Pokrandt notes, and it went from there.
Then, when Pokrandt (whom many credit with being the primary driving force in establishing and nurturing the event, and, in the words of one local resident, "a visionary in the truest sense of that word") was in Wausau attending a summer outdoor event, he noticed a group of hobbyists/recreators who were providing a voyageur-type encampment.

Since he knew one of the group's principals, Pokrandt soon convinced the powers-that-be to do a full winter encampment at Klondike Days -- something never done before. Thus came about the world-famous and historically faithful Klondike Days Voyageur Encampment put on by the River Country Red's Rendezvous group to this very day.

Pokrandt remembers that after the initial funding and donations from businesses like Trig's, "personal sponsors and volunteers came out of the woodwork, and we never looked back."

"We also strived to include the rich culture and heritage of the Native Americans who were an integral part of the settling and expansion of the Eagle River area, fur trading, logging, fishing, hunting, and commerce," Pokrandt adds. "To this day, the Klondike Days Native American Exposition relates in
ever-growing detail the culture and heritage of our Native American brethren."

And each year, Klondike Days draws more people -- from around the world. The weekend crowds now approach 10,000 visitors, and Klondike Days venues include the High School, Rocking W Stables and adjacent surrounding fields, and other locations around Eagle River.

The events continue to expand, including the authentic Voyageur's encampment, with recreations of authentic period foods, clothing, housing, and activities; dog and horse pulls; the only winter competitive lumberjack event in the Midwest; chainsaw carving; live bluegrass, and local music; sleigh rides; educational lectures and exhibits, from making a drum to blacksmithing, and popping authentic kettle corn; Native American Cultural Expositions; a permanent, original fur trader's cabin; a fabulous juried craft show featuring over 100 exhibitors whose works are for sale; foods including buffalo burgers, Paul Bunyan brownies, and wild rice soup; snowshoe demos; dogsled rides, and our newest addition to Klondike Days; snowshoe races and the list goes on.

When asked why he did it in the first place, Pokrandt (who is no longer directly involved in administering Klondike Days) simply says, "I wanted to leave a mark -- a mark that would tell the wonderful story and history of our Eagle River area, and our wonderful local people. I hope I've helped do that."
Proceeds from Klondike Days help fund college scholarships for local high school graduates, as well as improving local infrastructure of all types.

And what does the future hold?

Klondike Days' current Executive Director, Christine Schilling puts it this way: "We want to continue our quest to bring joy, fun, and education to those thousands of families who come to Klondike Days -- and that means even better and more meaningful family events in a warm, affordable, and constantly upgraded and comfortable setting."

Snowmobiling Continues... conditions fair/poor

Guests at the hotel headed out riding again today -- telling us that conditions away from town are considerably better then what we see from the highways. Warm temps have caused softening and melting on the trail, leaving a crusty base and deteriorating conditions. We are watching forecasts and hoping for more snow. At this point snowmobile trails are still rideable and many considered decent, although some have parked their sleds waiting for conditions to improve. Plan now for a weekend of hockey up north! The Eagle River Recreation Association (ERRA) to host the Ice Masters Tournament March 18-20, 2011.

Our 14th Annual Ice Masters Classic 3 on 3 Tournament is rapidly approaching. This fast paced half ice game is a real hit among the players and spectators. This is our 14th YEAR and it is the biggest and longest running 3 on 3 tournament you can find. Come and join the over 4000 previous participants of this one of a kind event. This year we will again target 70 - 75 teams for the largest 3 on 3 tournament anywhere.

We anticipate having Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam, and Girls divisions. The deadline for registration is March 1. However, each of the previous tournaments filled quickly, and we are anticipating a full tournament again this year. Submission prior to the deadline DOES NOT GUARENTEE you will be in the tournament. Registration applications are processed in the order received. Submit your registration early to assure your spot and confirm with an email that your registration has been sent and received.
Girls’ teams please note: Girls teams should register as U12, U14, U16 or U19, by February 25. The age divisions for the girls will be will determine by the registration response and teams will be contacted at that time. It is very doubtful that there will be 4 girls divisions, but if any given age group at least 4 teams, a tourney will be held for that age group. We may also merge age groups as needed. Feel free to go out and recruit additional teams for your age bracket.

The game is an amazingly fast half ice game similar to half court basketball. Upon change of possession, the puck must be cleared outside the blue line with all offensive players touching up prior to becoming involved in the play. The goalies compete as individuals and stay extremely busy. Our record to date is a PeeWee goalie facing 62 shots during the three six-minute minute periods.

All teams are guaranteed 3 games, with the possibility of playing 5, 6, or even 7 games in this modified double elimination format. Individual trophies are awarded to teams for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Thumper Bowl champs and for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place goalies in each division. Last year nearly a third of the participants left with individual trophies.

The event is held on the West end of "Little St Germain" lake near the intersection of Paton Road and Hwy 70(map). We have trailer parking on the ice(ice parking is safe) next to the return lane. Follow the signs from "Angry Daves" to the track !

Entrance Fees:

660' on Snow $5 each or 5 runs for $20
1000' on Shaved Ice $25 entrance fee includes 3 runs extra runs are $5 each or 5 runs for $20
$40 entrance fee for "Open Modified Unlimited Class"

The Prizes

All classes are sponsored for trophies and prizes. Radar Run Prizes will be awarded at "The Timber's" after the race on Saturday (5:30). Each year the top speed driver is awarded the "Snow King" trophy and will be held on display at the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame! For more information call 800-445-5370

St Germain Snowmobile Trails - Saturday January 8

We were out for a snowmobile ride today around St Germain and enjoyed the Bo-Boen trails... much improved after the 5-6 inches of snow we received the past few days.

Beautiful day with the sun sneaking out, partially blue sky and trails were in fair condition. We found icy spots along the way so watch out in the corners.

Roughly 9 inches more snow fell since yesterday and we are thrilled with all the snow to usher in the Christmas holiday and New Year! Skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers are in heaven, enjoying the beautiful winter weather and great trail conditions for all winter sports in the St Germain area.

Blizzard begins Saturday Morning!

By late morning Saturday, the snow fall has been heavy -- a great start to the winter season ahead welcomed by skiers, snowmobilers and snow-shoers! The Bo-Boen snowmobile trails and trails throughout Vilas County officially opened December 10 and this Dec 11 blizzard sure sets the stage for a heathy trail base.

Minocqua Winter Park is holding a cross-country ski Demo Days today. They are reporting some groomed ski trails and invite everyone out.

Prayers and Snow Dances Paid Off!

Snow fell all day yesterday and through the night... dropping about 5-6 inches more snow across the area. It's beautiful out here with snow-covered pines and the bustle of snow plows and shovels!

Vilas County snowmobile trails officially open today!

Area clubs including the Bo-Boens have not been out grooming or panning the trails just yet, but with last night's addition, they may be out this afternoon/evening to make initial runs to pack the base. We urge all snowmobilers to ride gingerly (not spinning your track or taking corners to aggressively) so to pack the snow and not scatter snow off the trails.

Now is the time to get out and enjoy your first trail ride of the season!

RE:                 Vilas County Snowmobile Trails Officially Open

THE STATE FUNDED SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM IN VILAS COUNTY WILL OFFICIALLY OPEN AT 1 P.M. ON FRIDAY 10 DECEMBER 2010.

The use of caution is strongly recommended. Trails are in early season condition and riders may encounter rough areas and icy patches. More snow is needed to enable area snowmobile clubs to provide the well groomed world class trails Vilas County is noted for. It is not recommended to cross area lakes until the route across the lake is clearly marked.

For more information on trail conditions, please contact the area chambers and local snowmobile clubs in the area you plan to ride.

St Germain's paved bike trail - new construction photos

Our friend, Walter Geist, took another bicycle ride to explore the new construction of the east leg of the Heart of the Northwoods Bike Trail in St Germain. The paved trail is now being expanded from downtown eastward past Rustic Manor and out to Highway O.

We are looking forward to next summer when we'll be able to hop onto the paved bicycle path and ride all the way north through Sayner and on to Boulder Junction and if we're still filled with energy ride back around to Arbor Vitae!

We will surely continue to offer our rental bikes from the hotel. Biking enthusiasts -- please let us know what's important to you so we can customize a biking experience for you in the future!

Exciting this morning to see the fresh-fallen snow throughout the northwoods! We received a couple of inches of wet heavy snow -- the first accummulating snow of the season. Glad our Christmas lights are already installed and we're looking forward to a great winter with best-ever snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and of course snowmobiling!

Stay tuned here as we plan to update regularly with Bo-Boen snowmobile trail conditions and snowfall reports.

St Germain's paved bike trail expanding to east past Rustic Manor

The paved bike trail has become a popular recreational option for local residents and vacationers alike. We are excited to announce that construction is underway to extend the trail through town and eastward passing Thunderbird Pass, Rustic Manor, Spang's, Halberstadt Road, South Bay Road, Elmer's Fun Park and all the way to Highway O. It will be a terrific addition providing all of us on the east side of town with direct access to the trail!

Snowmobile Safety Class

Snowmobile safety Education Class to be held in St. Germain December 28 & 29, 2010

Beginning January 1, 2001, any person born on or after January 1, 1985 and who has reached the age of 12, must have completed and received a snowmobile safety certificate in order to operate a snowmobile in Wisconsin. The certificate must be carried while operating the snowmobile, and displayed to a law enforcement officer upon demand. Snowmobile Safety Education Classes are offered in the fall and early winter, and should start appearing on the DNR’s web site within the next month or so.

All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR Customer ID# as part of the criteria to graduate from any Recreational Safety Class and provide that number to their instructor. Students can obtain a DNR Customer ID# from St. Germain Sport Marine during business hours or by calling 1-888-936-7463 between 7 am to 10 pm. You can also visit a Wisconsin DNR Service Center during their regular scheduled hours. For additional DNR Service Center hours and locations go to www.dnr.wi.gov and click on the “Contact US” tab located at the top.

The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club’s Snowmobile Safety Education Class will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 28 & 29, 2010. Anyone 11-1/2 years of age or older is eligible to take the class and receive a safety education certificate; however, the certificate does not become valid until the child reaches 12 years of age.

Pre-registration is required by calling either Bev Dittmar at 715-479-4605 or Ron Rhodes at 715-479-8007.
